Bringing Peace through Fairtrade

What is the Problem?

80% of the World’s land is owned by 3% of its population, and these 3% live in Rich countries. Poor farmers do not get a fair price for the food they grow for these richer countries.

What is Fair Trade?

  • Farmers receive a fair and stable price for their products
  • Farmers and plantation workers have the opportunity to improve their lives
  • Greater respect for the environment
  • Small-scale farmers gain a stronger position in world markets
  • A closer link between consumers and producers
Who supports Fair Trade?

Development agencies, e.g. OXFAM, churches, women’s groups, trade unions, youth groups and schools.

How do I know food is fairly traded?

By the FAIRTRADE mark, or by the Traidcraft symbol. The FAIRTRADE mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as a guarantee that the farmer is getting a better deal.
Traidcraft is a Christian organisation which deals in fairly traded products.

What do religions say about Fair Trade?

Christians and Jews say; “The world and all that are in it belong to the Lord; the earth and all who live in it are his” Psalm 24:1. In other words, humans are looking after the world for God and they are responsible to God as stewards of it. It is to be used in God’s way and for his purposes – for the good of the whole world.

Hindus say; “Whether he is well off or in distress, he must not pursue wealth through degrading or harmful activities, nor through forbidden occupations….” Law of Manu 4:18

Sikhs say; “The bounty of nature is there to be used. There is enough for all, but in this world it is not shared justly” Guru Nanak
