Frequently Asked Questions...
if I screw3/8 lag bolt into 100ft 10-12" Pine tree will it kill the tree?
tree range from 24 to 10" at base of trunk, and stand from about 90 to 110 ft. tall.want to screw 2 bolts per tree, about 3 to 4" into tree.don't want tree to die.?
Answer:
Each time you drill into the tree you are cause injury. Since trees don't heal, the injury remains forever. The tree protects itsself with internal chemical barrier walls to stop infection which will occur. If the tree is healthy, it can maintain the barrier walls for decades. But as a tree ages, it can not maintain the walls and infection starts to spread.
A 90 foot tree is probably near full maturity. If it is otherwise healthy, the injury from lag bolts will not kill it immediately, but the injury is there and the tree is impressed to contain it.
It's hard to say when a tree will die. The death process is usually very slow unless overwhelmed by insect, disease or injury. Who's to say the tree won't be struck by lightning next summer and killed?
If you really must put the bolts in there, realize you are injurying the tree, but if the tree is healthy, the bolt should not be the cause of death....immediately.
