Dog First Aid - Bloat
Bloat is considered to be the second leading killer of dogs. Bloat is otherwise known as Gastric Dilatation Volvulus. As the stomach is not fastened on any organ inside the dog's body, an excessive accumulation of air would cause it to twist or rotate 90 to 360 degrees so that food, water and air inside the stomach are trapped. The twisting of the stomach will cut off blood supply and result to the distention of the stomach so that pressure is placed on the nearby organs. Bloat would not occur if the dog can expel the accumulated air in the stomach. However, in most cases, the twisting of the stomach also causes the closing of the esophagus.
The dog's death is imminent if bloat management is not administered. There is practically no first aid treatment for bloat. Prompt professional attention is very necessary for a dog with this condition. Bloat though can happen to any dog anytime and anywhere. But if it is impossible to get the pet to a vet within an hour after the occurrence a bloat, it would be imperative for the owner to administer first aid to the dog.
It always pays to be ready for any eventuality thus a first aid kit in the car is very necessary especially for dog owners that take the pet in the wilderness for hunting or camping trips. The first aid kit should contain equipments necessary to administer first aid for bloat cases especially if the pet is one of the large breeds prone to have this acute digestive problem. A first aid kit for bloat should have a ½ inch or a ¼ inch vinyl tube, an 8 inch wooden block with a hole drilled in the center and a lubricating jelly.
Unproductive vomiting, distended abdomen, restlessness, excessive salivating are the first signs of bloat. In a matter of minutes, the dog's condition will rapidly deteriorate until it would be unable to stand and have pale or blue gums. Medical care is very necessary to save the dog's life.
First aid can be administered by positioning the block of wood inside the mouth of the dog and making sure that it is well secured with a gauze or a cord on the dog's lower jaw. Insert through the hole in the block the lubricated end of the tube and firmly slide down the dog's throat. Gently push the tube in little by little as the dog swallows. First point of resistance will be felt when the tube reaches the esophagus. Gently blow on the tube to expand the esophagus and to allow the smooth passage of the tube. Gas and fluids will be expelled when the tube reaches the stomach. Remove the remaining gas from the stomach by pushing locked wrist against the dog's stomach.
