AUTO REPAIR: Carburetor Tune-up, Overhaul, & Rebuilding (1 of 2)
When To Exchange Transmission Fluid
What precisely is a transmission flush?
A transmission flush is the method of removing the old worn out fluid along with the gunk that accumulates in the gears, torque converter, etc.. and replaces the transmission with brand fluid to get your car to two hundred thousand miles or more.
Should you bring it to an "oil and lube"?
Also do not bring your automobile to a "oil and lube" for a transmission flush. These guys are not transmission professionals and can result in major damage to your transmission. Use a transmission shop with ase certified technicians and make sure they change the filter with the flush is done.
When should you should get a transmission flush performed
if you have a very low mileage automobile or a high mileage car that has had the transmission routinely flushed then doing a fluid exchange is a excellent strategy.
When should a transmission flush be done?
If you have a car in excess of 100,000 miles and the fluid has never been exchanged or if you inspect the transmission fluid and it stinks like charred fluid you ought to pass up a transmission flush..the explanation why would not want to perform a flush is that once the transmission fluid flush is performed it could suck a bunch of grime, metal shavings, etc.. deep into your transmission gears and torque converter that could cause the transmission to fail many months after.
When should you have it done?
You should have your transmission flush done every 25,000 to 30,000 miles. The conventional charge of a transmission flush is $40.00 on the low end and up to one hundred dollars . A Transmission rebuild cost can be anywhere from $1,600 to several thousand dollars, so the low expense of a flush is very well worth the ounce of prevention to hold off a major overhaul.
Consult your transmission repair shop. Your transmission repair technician should quiz you about this and be more concerned with helping you to prevent a expensive repair, rather than putting dollars into their wallet.

Frequently Asked Questions...
1982 ford club wagon needs valve overhaul, were to get parts?
i have a 1982 ford club wagon XLT, it has a 4.8L. L6 motor, or you could call it an "inline 6". i got it for free, it runs and such, but the guy said it will need a valve overhaul and also i carburetor rebuild. i know were to get a carb rebuild kit, but i dont know what to look for when it comes to the valves. i have tried everywhere online, nobody seems to have what i am looking for. can somebody point me in the right direction? please and thank you!
Answer:
An automotive machine shop should be able to point you in the correct direction.
The valve seats will need surfacing, the valves themselves either replace or resurface.
Of course the valve guides need replacing.
The lifters either just checked or replaced.
And you have it apart, I'd check the camshaft for excessive wear.
