Cairns Fire Helmets - A History Of The First Fire Helmet
When looking for a fire helmet, most will select Cairns fire helmets, the quality choice since the 1850’s. The first fire protection device was originally made by a luggage maker, H.T. Gratacap, who’s specialty in tough, water-resistant leather.Later the Cairn family would take over the business adding their recognizable front identification shield to the original helmet design, the Cairn family has commited to keeping firefighters as safe as possible and have earned the reputation of being the most saftety conscious fire equipment company.
A Unique Timeline of the Cairns Fire Helmets
The Cairn brothers were known for being innovative and safety conscious with the first helmet being a well made product with a unique front shield that would become the sign of a Cairns product.
The first helmet was well received and provided inspiration for the company to grow their product line. Protective clothing, buckles, belts, hoses, boots and other necessary items a firefighter needed, became part of the Cairns’ line of products.
The Cairns Fire helmets were improved in the early 1920’s with the most modern new material, aluminum. These new Cairns Fire helmets that were fashioned from aluminum were a real breakthrough for the industry.
After a number of years, the Cairns cut down their products and were only manufacturing helmets. In 1974, they came out with a new, lighter helmet to comply with OSHA specs, named the 770 Philadelphian.
How Cairns Kept Up With Technology
The Cairns Fire Helmet, as we know it today, is a fair superior product, yet it remains one of the safest and most preferred helmet available.
With each new development the helmet has been modified. In the 70’s Cairns became aware of the research on impact and brain safety and began to use fiberglass and increased safety features on their helmets. The glass in the face shield was replaced with shatter resistant glass.
When Kevlar became available, around 1985 the Cairns developed a cutting edge new fire helmet which they named the 990 Intruder. The helmet had with three layers of Kevlar for a bullet resistant fire helmet.
Today you can buy Cairns helmets in 8 different colors of front panels, in either standard leather or patent leather and Scotchlite panels for more reflective qualities. There are 27 million possible combinations available.
