I hired a plumber to put a new valve kit in my bathroom before I had a new tub surround installed. WWYD?
The plumber came and spent six and a half hours cutting holes in the wall, adding copper pipes and welding. My roommate was home for the first four hours he was there. When I got home I didn't have the confidence that he was doing the job correctly, not because I know about plumbing, but because of his demeanor. He charged me $675.00 (he said I gave you a little break on the hours and $75 for parts).
The tub surround was installed and I decided not to call this guy back. Another plumber came in today to install the shower head, spout, etc. and said he did not feel right about doing the job because it would cost me another $600 to fix what this guy did. He suggested that I contact him and get him back out to fix his mistakes. I really don't want this guy back in my house. Do I need to put on my big girl pants and demand that this guy come and fix his mistakes at no charge?
Answer:
You have choices,
1) take the victim approach and let this gut get away with it.
2) Harden up and just get the other plumber to give a detailed report what is wrong along with a price. Give the first plumber a choice to either pay up or you will just get the other guy to do it and take through a disputes/small cliams court procedure. Biggest threat is to make a complaint to the plumbing licensing authority of poor workmanship. This will probably cause more fear to him than you threatening legal action. They have huge fine systems in place and if found the work was unsatisfactory order him to pay full costs.
