UNIVERSITY?
You may decide to apply for university towards the end of your Year 12 Watch out for events taking place, check out the information in the Study Areas to help you decide on courses and universities and sign up for a UCAS [Universities and Colleges Admissions Service] card during the Autumn term of Y12. Your tutor is going to be invaluable in this process. They are old hands at the UCAS thing and can make a huge difference to your chances of getting where you want to go. If you decide to apply you will use the electronic UCAS [Universities and Colleges Admissions Service]. Give a hard copy to your tutor who will help you check it and use their knowledge of you to write a reference. There is lots of help available from your tutor and on the college network. Ask and use it and do it in good time. Use the page in your study planner to make notes to help you.
A CAREER OR FURTHER TRAINING?
Lots of companies and professions offer excellent ‘in-house’ training and professional qualifications. You may decide to enter the world of full time work at 18. If so use the resources in the Library and spend serious amounts of time talking things over with Connexions. Connexions advisors are available to Post 16 students at weekly drop-ins as well as in Glossop during office hours. They have all the latest about who can provide what training and qualifications and as these tend to change quite frequently you really need to get the up-to-date information. WORK EXPERIENCE
Most employers and universities will expect you to have done some relevant work experience. You should think of it as essential if you are going into teaching, the health services [nursing, medicine, physiotherapy], veterinary practice, law or business. You can arrange this experience with the help of Mrs O’Doherty. She will help you secure a placement and make the necessary formal arrangements.
