Archaeology AS & A2

There is no need to have studied Archaeology before. It would be useful to have an A to C pass in either Geography or History at GCSE. If you have an interest in solving puzzles, detective stories, interpreting clues or an interest in how people lived in the remote past then this course is for you!

There will be opportunities for fieldwork. This will involve day, weekend or longer residential trips to various archaeological sites and museums in England, Wales and/or Scotland. For the A2 course students will need to undertake a personal study of an archaeological question within the Derbyshire or Greater Manchester area.

Year 12 AS Archaeology Course:

Unit 1 How archaeological sites are discovered

Unit 2 What happens after excavation?

Unit 3 Religion and Ritual in Prehistoric Britain

Year 13 A2 Level Archaeology Course

Unit 4 A study from any part of the world and of different archaeological periods of settlement and social issues

Unit 5 Technology and economics

Unit 6 A study based upon personal research

Career Prospects:

The study of Archaeology involves a wide range of the key skills, which are so highly valued by employers. These include abstracting, interpreting, evaluating and analysing information and then communicating it in a variety of ways including text, map, graphs and tables. It involves understanding scientific methods and increasingly the use of information technology is of growing importance.
