CHILD DEVELOPMENT

A SUBJECT CHOICE

 

This GCSE course is for anyone who is interested in people, particularly children.

The course aims to increase your knowledge and understanding of human needs, as individuals and within groups, and the influences of social, cultural and economic factors.

You will focus on child development from pre-conception to 5 years. The subject content has been divided into the following sections:

  • The Family: This will cover planning a family, anatomy and physiology of reproduction, pre-conceptual care, pregnancy, preparations for the birth and the birth.
  • The Care of the Child: This will include, the new-born baby, post-natal care of the mother and baby, feeding and nutrition, hygiene environment, child care provision, medical needs and childhood illness and Health and Services personnel.
  • Development of the Child: This will cover the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development, and special children

The assessment is made up of a terminal written paper taken by candidates at the end of the course (50% of the total mark). The paper is available in two tiers of assessment:

Foundation Tier Grades C - G

Higher Tier Grades A* - D.

Coursework is common to both tiers and accounts for the other 50% of the candidate’s total mark.
