Dance GCSE is split up into 3 strands: Performance, Choreography and Appreciation. Throughout the course, students will increase their dance knowledge and experience by performing and creating dances using a range of styles. Professional choreographers will also be studied.
Group Piece 20% - candidates must perform within a small group in a piece lasting approximately 1½ minutes. Set Study 20% - each student must perform a set dance that is set by the exam board which lasts 2 minutes. The total marks for Performance is 40%.
Each student must choreograph their own piece which can be either a solo (1½ minutes) or group piece (2 – 3 minutes). The finished piece is worth 30%. Students must also provide a commentary of the choreographic process they went through when creating their piece. The commentary is 10%. Total marks for Choreography is 40%.
Students must sit a written exam worth 20% of the marks. There will be a section related to dance in general and a section relating specifically to the professional piece – “Front Line” by Henri Oguike. For further information on any aspect of this course please see Mrs Nevin.
