ENGINEERING

A SUBJECT CHOICE

Engineering is a Vocational GCSE targeted at those students who want a more work-related qualification. The qualification is a double award (i.e. Two GCSE’s).

Will the Course Suit Me?

The course will appeal to students who:

  • Are interested in manufactured products and how they are designed and made
  • Have an interest and ability in practical work
  • Have an interest in technical drawing
  • Have an interest in new technology
  • Have a lively and inquiring mind
  • Have an ability to communicate ideas by writing, discussion and drawing.

What will I learn?

You will be involved in:

  • Investigating a range of engineering industrial processes
  • Acquiring and developing engineering skills of construction and assembly
  • Developing, designing and drawing skills using specialist drawing equipment
  • Learning how to use ICT for designing and making.

What is the Course Structure?

The course is taught and assessed in three Units.

Unit 1 : Design and Graphical Communication.

This Unit will teach you about the design process, developing and presenting ideas and producing engineering drawings, using drawing equipment and Computer Aided Design software.

Unit 2 : Engineered Products.

You will make engineered products in the workshop using a wide range of machine and hand tools. You will use Computer Aided Manufacture to make products and learn how to check the quality of your work. All aspects of health and safety will be taught.

Unit 3 : Application of Technology.

You will learn how new technology has helped design and manufacture engineering products. You will learn about the benefits and implications new technology and its effect on the workforce, the community and the global and local environments.
