English Language
Are you enjoying English GCSE? Would you like to continue with a course which concentrates on developing your creative writing skills? A course that will provide you with opportunities to study the wide range of written materials around us today? A course, which looks closely at the role of communication in society?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then AQA English Language A-Level might be for you. Communication skills are vital no matter what career area interests you.
COURSE CONTENT
The course will combine learning about the nature and function of language in human thought and communication with learning how to use English more effectively. You will study language in use, both in its written and spoken forms, as well as having many opportunities for your own writing. This will involve studying a variety of materials ranging from novels and poetry to newspapers, television and radio. Part of the course will involve a project of your own studying some aspect of language, such as, how young children learn to speak, the way newspapers use language (the possibilities are endless!). There will also be considerable opportunity for you to suggest areas of study for yourself.
The course is modular with students taking AS examinations in January and June of Year 12. Students can then choose to follow another AS course or to pursue the subject to A2 Level in Year 13.
TEACHING AND LEARNING STYLES
You will be expected to take a great deal of responsibility for your own learning. You will be encouraged to question and investigate areas of language use yourself. Theoretical aspects of the course are taught by practical methods, including visits to study language use in different environments and the use of technology such as video cameras and word-processors.
CAREER PROSPECTS
English Language is fast becoming one of the most popular A-Levels. Universities welcome it and while it is relevant for careers in all areas, it is particularly useful for students interested in a career in journalism, advertising, public relations or anything requiring evidence of communication skills.
