Choice of a Modern Language You can choose to continue to GCSE level the language you enjoy studying the most. You may also take two languages. Please ask your language teacher if you need further advice. Why take French? With the current European developments the need for young people to speak a foreign language is increasingly important. France is our nearest neighbour and French is an important world language, which is useful in many walks of life. What is the course like? In French GCSE you will learn to communicate over a range of topic areas. The course follows on quite naturally from topics covered in Year 7 to 9. All candidates will be entered for GCSE tests in Listening, Reading and Speaking at Foundation or Higher level. This will, of course, depend on what you and your teachers think you are best suited for. The writing is tested by the submission of coursework over the 2 years. Each skill is worth 25% of the final mark. Will I be able to do it? Yes, if you like the idea of being able to communicate with French speakers. Learning French is all about communicating with French people in their own language. You should enjoy speaking and listening to French as well as reading and writing the language. To gain the best possible grades at GCSE, you need to be able to study independently at home, backing up your classwork with thorough learning for homework. Will I be able to visit France? There is a school journey to the south of France in July. We visit various sites of interest there, go into Italy for a day, and also do some studying! We stay in a centre right by the beach, and experience a variety of delicious French foods. For further information please see your French teacher.
