You can choose to continue to GCSE level the language you enjoy studying the most. You may also take two languages. Please ask your language teacher if you need further advice. Why choose German? In recent years it has become more and more obvious that this country needs people who can speak foreign languages. Now, with the “open market” and the growing importance of a united Germany, there is an even greater need for German speakers, especially in the areas of business, technology and tourism. What is the course like? In German GCSE you will learn to communicate in German over a range of topic areas. You will hear a large amount of everyday German on tape and you will be given every opportunity to speak the language. The course in general follows on quite naturally from the work you will have done in years 7 to 9. Will I be able to do it? In order to be successful, you must be prepared to work hard during lesson time and be keen to practise your German. You must also be prepared to back this practice up with regular homework. You will be encouraged and helped to take up contact with young people who speak German. All students take examinations in Speaking, Listening and Reading, at Foundation or Higher level. Writing is tested through coursework over the two years. Each skill is worth 25% of the final mark. Will I be able to visit Germany? 1993 saw the first exchange of students between Glossopdale and Bad Vilbel and you will be able to take part in this during your GCSE course. The German students visit England in November and you will go to Germany in March. For further information please see your German teacher.
