HISTORY

A SUBJECT CHOICE

Why might it be a good idea to study History?

The best reason for studying History is that you like and enjoy it, and have done well in it so far.

The College’s History Course leads to a GCSE examination in the subject with a full range of grades. You will need to enjoy reading and be able to read difficult books without too much trouble. You need to enjoy developing and discussing your own ideas about what you read. Above all you need to think clearly, logically and critically, and keep an open mind at the same time.

Topics:

1. Study in Development: Medicine and Public Health Through Time.

2. A Modern World Study: The history of modern China to help explain the situation today. Coursework

3. History Around Us: The history you can see in your own environment; the industrial environment of Quarry Bank Mill. Coursework.

4. An In-depth Study: History in detail: a study of about 50 years of a country’s history : Britain 1815 - 1851. This traces Britain’s social and economic changes including prison conditions, children in mills, railways and poverty.

Assessment

One examination covers topic 1 and provides 37·5% of the final marks. The second examination covers topic 4, in which you will be tested on your knowledge and understanding of the period as well as answering questions on sources. This second examination provides 37·5% of the final marks. You will also be required to produce two pieces of coursework. These assignments will be taken from topics 2 and 3 and will provide 25% of the final marks.
