PE
This course follows the OCR syllabus, which takes a multi-disciplinary approach, encouraging the development of different methods of enquiry with the focal point being the performer and the performance. The course is based on the interaction between the theory and practice of Physical Education.
The course has six modules of teaching and learning, each examined by its associated unit of assessment. Advanced Subsidiary (AS) GCE is assessed at a standard between GCSE and Advanced (A) GCE and can be taken as a stand-alone qualification or as the first part of the full A-level course.
In the first year of the course, there are the three AS units of assessment:
UNIT 1 The Application of Physiological and Psychological Knowledge to Improve Performance
UNIT 2 Contemporary Studies in PE and Sport
UNIT 3 Coursework - Performance and its Improvement through Critical Analysis
In the second year of the course, there are three A2 units of assessment.
UNIT 4 Physical Education: Historical, Comparative, Biomechanical and Sports Psychology options
UNIT 5 Exercise and Sport Physiology (20% of total A-level marks)
UNIT 6 - Coursework. The improvement of effective performance and critical evaluation of the practical activities (15% of total A-level marks).
Candidates are again assessed in two activities; one individual and one game activity. The assessment is divided in two parts:
- The selection, application and performance of skills in an open environment
- The evaluation and appreciation of performance through observation and synopsis of knowledge.
The minimum entry requirement is interest and aptitude in sport and physical education both from the viewpoint of practical performance and from the theoretical side. You must have at least a ‘C’ grade at GCSE level. Students should be prepared to express their ideas orally and to read around the subject. Video film is used to record personal performance and to observe and analyse performance techniques. It is also important to be involved in sports clubs or regular sporting activity.
