Physics

Advancing Physics

Advancing Physics is a contemporary course developed by the Institute of Physics, whose core aims are that this course:

 Is attractive and accessible to a wide variety of students.

 Sets physics in a variety of contexts, illustrating connections with everyday life, people, places and cultures.

 Rewards students of initiative and commitment and allows them to develop their own interests.

 Makes physics exciting and relevant.

The course content covers the full range of physics concepts from mechanics, waves and optics through electricity to atomic and nuclear physics. The course is supported by a purpose written textbook and students may buy their own CD ROM. Extra advice may also be found on a website designed for the course.

The course is divided into 2 levels, AS and A2. There are 3 assessed units in each year, with coursework forming an important and substantial part. Assessment takes place both in January and June of each year of the course. Candidates may re-sit each unit once only.

Minimum entry requirements are CC in Dual Award Science or C in GCSE Physics. It is expected that students also have a good grade in Mathematics and it is to be hoped that they are also studying advanced level Maths. Other complementary GCE studies are Chemistry, Biology, Design Technology, Geography, Art and Music.

Careers when GCE AS/A Level Physics are either useful or essential include: architecture, astronomy, computer science, dentistry, engineering, geophysics, medicine, metallurgy, ophthalmology, pharmacy, physics, physiotherapy, radiography and veterinary studies.
