PSYCHOLOGY

A SUBJECT CHOICE

 

This is 2 year course following the OCR syllabus. It is a broad based course that would allow you a ‘taster’ of what will be a new subject area to you.

It is anticipated that students considering this course will have a mature approach to work as they are required to understand and use a wide range of subject specific terms, take a detached and objective view of human behaviour and act in an ethically responsible manner.

 

SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY

  • Social Influence – looking at conformity and obedience.
  • Environment + Behaviour – looking at personal space and territory.

BEHAVIOURAL PSYCHOLOGY

  • Phobias – looking at what they are and explanations of how they arise.
  • Aggression – looking at the theories of human aggression.

DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY

  • Attachment – looking at development of attachment in humans.
  • Cognitive Development – looking at the work of Piaget.

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENTIATION

  • Aspects of morality – looking at explanations of moral development.
  • Attitudes of prejudice – looking at what prejudice means and how it comes about.

COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

  • Memory – looking at explanations of how memory works (or doesn’t!).
  • Perception – looking at explanations about how we see the world – the link between our eyes and our brains.

BIO-PSYCHOLOGY

  • Stress – looking at the physiology and psychology of stress.
  • Sex and Gender – looking at explanations of how we acquire our sex/gender role.

 

The final examination consists of two papers, each 1¼ hours long. The examinations can be taken at either Foundation (Papers 1+2) or Higher level (Papers 3+4).

There is also a coursework element consisting of a report of a psychological investigation carried out by the student.
