Tool Help?

My dad is a good mechanic and he said I should start looking for a good set of tools to start out with. I dont have much money but want a complete set. (More than just wrenches and sockets.) I mean that has vise grips, hammer, and pliers sets too. I found this while flipping through Northern Tool:

It seems to have basically everything i need for basic repairs. I might buy a set of Craftsman Ratcheting Wrenches to replace the normal ones in the kit though. (My Dad got a set and they are AWESOME!!) It also has a "limited lifetime warranty". I think I am going to buy it, but want the opinion of some proffesionals. The reviews are all good. My Dad said that I should try building a kit, from Craftsman or mac, instead of buying this one. He thinks it is low quality. But i dont have enough money to build a set i need from Craftsman or mac!
Is there a kit like what I need that is a different brand? Recomend a kit to me!

there are some good answers here already, but basically what are you going to do? are you looking to do basic car repair, more advanced auto repairs, specific trade repairs, what.. answer that to yourself then ask what am i going to need to do the majority of my jobs?
i would stear away from crapsman screwdrivers because the tips arent hardened and tend to wear off when you need them
ridgid pipe wrenched are great, but pricy-my crapsman ones tend to get the job done pretty well, but the teath wear off on them
gear wrenches are a godsend! invest in some of them for sure
basic crapsman ratchets and sockets (for starting cheap) I prefer SK but they are pricy
